AFRICAN ROSEWOOD

Guibourtia coleosperma

A heavy hardwood that finishes well

and ages to a deep rosy brown color.

DENSITY:   850 kg/m3,  52 lbs/ft3

 

GRAIN:   Has a very fine grain that finishes to a velvety texture.

 

STABILITY:   Dimensionally stable,

though a bit less so than Rhodesian

Teak in long lengths.

 

ORIGIN:   Angola, Botswana, Cameroon, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

 

USES:   Veneers, inlays, fine furniture, cabinetry, turning and flooring.


Similar in color and grain to American Walnut.

 

Mukwa

Pericopsis angloensis

A medium weight wood with a moderately

tight grain and a medium brown color.

DENSITY:   590 kg/m3,  41 lbs/ft3

 

GRAIN:   Straight to interlocked grain with a medium texture.

 

STABILITY:   Dimensionally stable.

 

ORIGIN:   Angola, DRC, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

 

USES:   Historically used for canoe building and musical instruments.  Currently used for furniture, cabinetry, doors, decorative veneers and curios.


 

Teak

RHODESIAN (ZAMBEZI) TEAK

Baikiaea plurijuga

A heavy, tan wood with black flecks

and a tight grain that finishes well and

ages to a deep reddish brown color.

DENSITY:   914 kg/m3,  56 lbs/ft3

 

GRAIN:   Has a very fine grain that finishes to a velvety texture.

 

STABILITY:   Dimensionally stable.

 

ORIGIN:   Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

 

USES:   Historically used for railroad ties due to its natural resistance to rot.  Currently used for flooring, furniture, cabinetry and high value construction.  It is a heavy wood that is stronger than Teak and Maple.
